For salary data, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics counts sterilization technicians as "medical equipment preparers," professionals who "prepare, sterilize, install, or clean laboratory or health-care equipment." According to the BLS, the average mean salary for this occupation is $30,350, or $14.59 per hour, as of May 2011. The median annual salary is almost identical -- $14.18, or $29,490 per year -- suggesting a very even distribution of wages across all sterilization technicians.
Salary RangeMedical equipment preparers in the 10th percentile earn a median hourly wage of $9.84 and a median annual salary of $20,460, according to the BLS. Sterilization technicians in the 90th percentile earn $19.97 per hour, or $41,530 per year -- approximately twice as much as the lowest earners.
Earnings by StateMassachusetts is the highest-paying state for medical equipment preparers, according to the BLS.Sterilization technicians there earn a median annual salary of $38,250. Nevada, where the median salary is $37,490, is not far behind, while sterilization technicians in Hawaii and Connecticut earn more than $35,000 per year, on average. However, medical equipment preparers in the District of Columbia earn more than their peers in any other state. The median annual salary in the capital is more than $39,000.
Employment by StateCalifornia (6,420) and Florida (5,760) are by far the two states with the most jobs in medical equipment preparation. Florida also has the highest concentration of medical equipment preparation jobs in the country; technician employment is 0.81 for every 1,000 jobs in the state, according to the BLS. Other states that employ high numbers of medical equipment preparers include Texas (2,820), New York (2,400) and Ohio (1,950). Regionally, the Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Tampa, Miami, Minneapolis, Orlando, Portland and Houston metropolitan areas are all significant employers of medical equipment preparers.
